Photorefractive Keratoplasty (PRK) Eye Surgery
In Photorefractive Keratoplasty eye surgery, an excimer laser is used to correct low to moderate degrees of nearsightedness and farsightedness. In this type of refractive surgery, the thin and weak corneal epithelial layer is removed, and the tougher corneal stromal tissue is ablated (thinned). After the procedure, the corneal surface will replace itself. However, the eye may be irritated for a few days until the corneal surface re-grows.
Lens Replacement Eye Surgery
For people who are severely farsighted or severely nearsighted, an alternative eye surgery is replacement of their natural lens with an artificial lens, lens replacement surgery. This is essentially the same operation as cataract surgery, an operation that has been perfected over the years. In patients who are beginning to develop a cataract or who are within the older cataract prone age group, lens replacement surgery is logical. For other patients who have extremely poor eyesight, it is often the only choice for eye surgery. Newer lenses that correct for both distance and near vision are now available.
Satisfaction with modern refractive surgery, Photorefractive Keratoplasty and lens replacement surgery is very high, and complications are rare. Most patients who have eye surgery do well, gaining a whole new world of freedom from dependence on eyeglasses or contact lenses.
